3D micro-molded LED light engine

Abstract—3D micro-scaled lenses on light-emitting diodes (LEDs) light engine are realized through ultra-precision injection molding in this study. The geometrical construction of single lens is fabricated using 5-axis machining and has pitch scale from sub-millimeter to micrometer on curved surface. The number of pitch is tunable according to the desired radiation pattern of light source. The radiation pattern is designed to 40∘and the radius of lens is less than 3 mm. The simulated radiation patterns of micro-scaled LED package using Monte Carlo ray tracing are accurately match the experimental results. An idea of using primary optical system in small size to replace the huge secondary optical system is proposed. The size and cost of light fixture can be effective to reduce in lighting applications.
